What is Generative Engine Optimization?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring and writing content so that AI search engines extract, quote, and cite it in their generated answers. Where traditional SEO targets Google's blue links, GEO targets the AI layer that now sits above those links.

As of 2026, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT Search, and Perplexity collectively handle billions of queries per month. A brand that is not cited in those answers is effectively invisible to a growing share of its audience.

How GEO Differs from Traditional SEO

Traditional SEO optimizes for crawlers and ranking algorithms. GEO optimizes for language models that extract meaning, summarize context, and select sources to cite. The signals overlap (authority, structured data, topical depth) but GEO adds requirements traditional SEO ignores: answer-first formatting, citation capsules, entity clarity, and passage-level quotability.
